Our friends at The Bear Cave put together a neat list of free and paid resources available for professional investors. I wanted to add to their excellent list - but with an Asian twist.

Here are the best resources that I’ve been able to identify for you:

The best podcasts in Asia

  3. Variant Perception - One of my favourite macro research providers that’s data driven. Their analysts are exceptionally well-read.

  4. Value Punks - An excellent new Substack that has an international focus but with two Asian ideas so far

  5. Kenkyo Investing - The definitive blog on Japanese deep value small caps

  6. New Vila Equity Research - high-quality research on Asian stocks from the US

  7. Value Investing - ASEAN focused value stock Substack based out of Malaysia

  8. DJY Research - An excellent research service for Asian growth / tech stocks

  9. China Charts - A Substack with - you guessed it - thought-provoking charts

  10. China Beige Book - On-the-ground surveys and analytics on Chinese macro

  11. nipponNugget - Introduced me to Japanese small-cap high-flyers I had never heard about before

  12. Emerging Markets and Value - Olivier Marz’s emerging markets-focused investing Substack

  13. Tabbush Report - An excellent bank focused Substack, not many updates recently but reach out to Daniel if you need institutional-grade bank research

  14. Global Stock Picking - Emerging market-focused blog based out of Hong Kong

  15. Searching 4 Value - Germany-based international investor whose work I really enjoy reading. He also sends out links e-mails on a regular basis.

  16. Chinese Characteristics - Lilian Li’s Chinese tech focused Substack

  17. Koneko Research - Very high-quality Canadian blog on Chinese stocks and increasingly American REITs.

  18. Minority Report - A blog focused on frontier markets. Michael McGaughy is passionate about corporate governance and an overall great guy.

  19. Profit Hunting - Singapore blog with an interesting local perspective

  20. Raper Capital - Jeremy is an excellent trader and has an eye for event-driven opportunities, living in Japan but has an international focus

  21. Thai Capitalist - Pon knows the Thai market better than anyone I know and his daily updates provide a range of commentary you won’t get elsewhere

  22. The Value Pendulum - One of very few Asia focused research services out there, though he has shifted his focus to the United States recently

  23. Undervalued Shares - Swen Lorenz’s research service on international stocks might provide the best value out there of any service out there

  24. Webb-site.com - David Webb’s platform for information on Hong Kong stocks, including filings and news on stocks and individuals

  25. Asian Century Stocks - This Substack is focused on value stocks in the Asia-Pacific, as you may well know


The best English language news sources

  1. Nikkei Asia - A magazine with cross-Asian content

  2. Taipei Times - Taiwan’s most professional news website

  3. The Business Times - Singapore’s leading business publication

  4. Bangkok Post - One of the best newspapers in Asia, period. Focus on Thailand

  5. South China Morning Post - Hong Kong’s best newspaper, at least historically

  6. Caixin - The best mainland Chinese business newspaper

  7. The Jakarta Post - The leading English newspaper in Indonesia

  8. Business Korea - South Korean English language business publication

  9. The Edge Markets - My preferred source of information for Malaysian stocks

  10. Business World - A leading business publication for the Philippines

  11. The Economic Times - Business newspaper for India

  12. Emerging World - Daily reporting from emerging markets

  13. Dari Mulut ke Mulut - A politics-focused Substack focused on Southeast Asia

  14. Asia Sentinel - thought-provoking news stories from around the region

  15. Sinocism - Bill Bishop’s Substack is the definitive guide to Chinese elite politics


The best online tools I have come across

  1. Twitter - I use Twitter to connect with other like-minded individuals and to search for information about obscure topics

  2. Google Trends - Understand consumer trends through Google user search queries

  3. Alexa - My go-to platform for website traffic analytics, costs US$79/month but will, unfortunately, shut down by May 2022. Similarweb might be an alternative, though it is significantly more expensive.

  4. Naver Datalab - Similar to Google Trends but for Korean search engine Naver (Korean language)

  5. Baidu Index - Similar to Google Trends but for Chinese search engine Baidu; has become difficult to access for overseas individuals however (Chinese language)

  6. Visual Ping - Monitor website changes, for example, investor relations websites for new releases

  7. Subredditstats.com - Find the relative rankings of any subreddit, to understand consumer trends

  8. Glassdoor - Find out the truth about companies through employee reviews

  9. Kanzhun — A Chinese version of Glassdoor (Chinese language)

  10. Weibo - Get a sense of what locals think in China, or what the government-directed algorithm wants you to see

  11. /sitemap.xml - Add this to the end of any URL to get a full-page directory of a particular website

  12. App Annie - Daily rankings of Android or iOS apps for particular markets

  13. SensorTower - Similar to App Annie, app ranking analytics

  14. CamelCamelCamel - Understand the demand for particular products through prices on Amazon.com

  15. StockX - Gauge second-hand prices for collectables

  16. Social Blade - Social media analytics, including for Twitter and YouTube

  17. Feedly RSS Reader - I use Feedly to monitor blogs and newspapers for updates, the paid version of US$6/month also enables you to search effectively across your monitored websites

  18. LinkedIn - Understand recent personnel changes for the company you’re investigating

  19. Listen Notes - Find a podcast that any individual has participated in

  20. Flighttracker24 - Track the private jet of the CEO of the company you’re investigating to understand his or her priorities

  21. Bloomberg - If you can afford it (US$2,300/month), there’s nothing like a Bloomberg machine to get the financial data you need

  22. TIKR - An alternative to the Bloomberg terminal for US$15/month

Wow! Treasure Trove. Thank you!

One thing that bugs me is the Spotify links, I'd prefer actual podcast website or google podcast (since is it is free), but that's just me being selfish :)

Not sure if there is a podcast agregator that just gives an option to open in the prefered app.
