Weekly Highlights
Post of the week
Last week, I wrote a comprehensive post on Malaysian compounder stocks. I reviewed the list of Malaysian companies with market caps above US$50 million to identify those with sustainable competitive advantages. These include Westports, Ajinomoto (Malaysia), Spritzer and many others. I also provided an overview of the Malaysian stock market to help you get a sense of the opportunity set. Tweet of the week
I keep experimenting with generative AI models. On Tuesday, I submitted five identical queries to the Perplexity Pro (Best model setting), ChatGPT Plus o3 and Gemini Advanced 2.5 Pro, to see which model performed the best. These queries included summaries, web searches, reasoning, and more. My conclusion is that ChatGPT’s o3 model delivers the best answers overall. However, ChatGPT Plus users only get 100 messages per week. And the o3 model is also slow. So a good approach is to use ChatGPT’s 4o model and switch to o3 if you don’t get the desired answers. Podcast episode of the week
Hong Kong shareholder activist and private investor David Webb attended a fireside chat at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club in Hong Kong. David has late-stage cancer and months to live. So the chat was a farewell, with many in the audience thanking him for his activism. He’s originally from the UK but moved to Hong Kong in the early 1990s, and then became independently wealthy through private investing. Since 1999, he’s been running Webb-site.com, a platform for corporate governance reform in Hong Kong. David worries that Hong Kong has moved away from its laissez-faire economy towards central planning. But he’s also optimistic that China and Hong Kong will become freer over time, as central planning puts a damper on economic growth. You can find the whole conversation here.
