#1 newsletter for Asian value stocks

There are 10,000 listed companies in Asia. But how many of them do you know?

That’s what I’m trying to address with the Asian Century Stocks newsletter. I help you understand the publicly listed companies in the region to help you make informed decisions.

When I started the newsletter in 2021, my idea was that Asia is one of the most dynamic regions in the world. Yet it’s waas under-covered in media and by other research providers. Asia remains off-the-beaten path. And that’s the issue I tried to address by starting a value-focused newsletter.

This is one of my favorite charts. It shows you how the earth’s economic center of gravity has moved to the East over the past 70 years. Asia is becoming more relevant for each decade that passes. Not only does Asia have a 5 billion population - it’s also well-educated and hard-working.

Right now, investors have become cautious about China’s economic development. But Asia is more than China. In fact, manufacturing has largely stayed in the region, just moved to countries like Malaysia and India.

I’ve long argued that investors need better sources of information. Up until the rise of Substack, investors had been underserved. But with newsletter like Asian Century Stocks, you can become as well-informed as any professional.

So what do you get as a subscriber to Asian Century Stocks?

  • Each year you will receive over 20 well-chosen deep-dive reports.

  • You will also receive industry thematics to understand entire sectors.

  • And you will also receive updates on the 15 or so stocks in my personal Asia-focused portfolio

This is a full-time occupation for me. I take pride in making the newsletter as helpful for you as possible. My single focus is on serving you and other subscribers.

My deep dives are typically 40-60-slide PowerPoint decks that enable you to get to know the company on a deep level. That’s why I call them “deep dives.” You can rest assured that you’ll understand all aspects of a business and not just the surface-level information you might find elsewhere.

I also record videos where I introduce the company in a 10-15 minute conversation that gets to the gist of the story. And you can also read the summary that comes with each deep dive report.

Here is an example of such a deep-dive report to give you an idea of what you get:

You will also receive thematic reports. These are meant to spark ideas related to a particular sector or product. You’ll get to know the companies benefitting from a trend and understand what distinguishes them from each other.

Here is an example of such a report:

Finally, I provide full disclosure of my Asia-focused portfolio. Each month, I also give you updates on what’s happened with each of these companies. I follow these companies closely and tell you month-to-month if anything has changed.

Finally, I send out monthly emails with the favorite content that I’ve come across during that month. These include stock write-ups, long-form articles, podcasts and charts.

I typically send out emails 1-2 per week. My deep-dives are typically published on Sunday mornings, so that you can read them with your Sunday morning coffee.

I’ve been writing weekly for over three years now. So you can trust that I will deliver on my promises. Check out my table of contents to see what you will unlock once you become a subscriber.

I would recommend readers to subscribe to a few Substacks to have a full collection that help them make informed decisions. For Latin American stocks, I recommend Ian Insider Corner. For American stocks, I recommend Clark Square Capital's Ultimate Value. For European stocks, I recommend Sweet Stocks.

So who am I and what makes me qualified to discuss Asian equities? My name is Michael Fritzell and I’m a Swedish citizen living in Asia since 2009. I have over 15 years of industry experience, and most of that experience was in this part of the world: focusing on Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore, Indonesia, etc.

I became a CFA charterholder in 2012. I have a Master’s Degree in Finance from the Stockholm School of Economics. I’m a also long-time member of Joel Greenblatt’s Value Investors Club, a membership site that’s notoriously difficult to get into. I’m also a regular contributor to Manual of Ideas, a reputable investor conference organizer.

You can find cheaper newsletters elsewhere. But I doubt they’d be any good. Few provide as broad coverage and with the same level of detail as Asian Century Stocks. If a normal newsletter is like a Daihatsu, then Asian Century Stocks is like a Rolls-Royce. You won’t find any newsletter with a better signal-to-noise ratio.

The price is currently $349/year or $29/month. If you have a $100,000 portfolio, $349 equals 0.35% of the portfolio value. I’ve spent a great deal of time thinking about the price, and I consider it to be fair - one that offers value to you while enabling me to support my family.

Subscribers have been satisfied with the service:

"Great idea generation, well written."

"Thank you for all the high-quality, detailed reports.”

"Love the work you do! Thanks for all the amazing business deep-dives."

"Good to see someone covering the interesting opportunities available in HK!"

"Excellent analysis on less well covered stocks & sectors"

"Thanks for the quick reply and helpful trial! I look forward to reading the articles you put so much work into!"

"To be introduced to Asian companies with exciting business models and attractive fundamentals from the perspective of a Western European with 15 years of "local knowledge" is simply unique in this form."

I’ve also received support from Substack, who chose Asian Century Stocks to become one of its Featured Publications in 2022. Their Featured Publications exemplify best practices, including posting regularly and engaging with readers.

I was also one of the 11 writers who won a Substack Fellowship in 2021. We were chosen based on the quality of our publications:

“From a talented, competitive pool, a panel of judges selected 11 writers based on the clarity and insight of their publications, their ability to inspire new writers, and their appetite for community engagement.”

So I encourage you to try the newsletter and see if you like it. I offer all new readers a one-month free trial. If you don’t like the service, just cancel before the 30 days are up. I promise you that your card will not be charged.

What if you regret your purchase after those 30 days? I consider that unlikely, but if it does happen just reply to any of my email ands I’ll refund you pro-rata with no questions asked.

Can you invest in the stocks I write about in the newsletter? Sure. I am not a financial advisor, so I won’t recommend stocks to you. But in terms of trading access, at least 20x of the stocks I cover each year can be bought and sold on regular brokerage accounts such as those provided by Interactive Brokers - in other words, stocks in Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Australia, and New Zealand. Soon, Interactive Brokers will also offer access to stocks in Malaysia and South Korea. As long as you’re on Interactive Brokers, you’ll get plenty of value from the service.

Will I cover names that are liquid enough to buy? Yes. Trading liquidity is decent in Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. And these markets are my primary focus. A large proportion of the companies covered are in the US$1 billion+ category, with trading volumes above US$1 million per day.

So Asian Century Stocks is a unique newsletter that enables you to become smarter about equities in Asia. You’ll get to know over 20 companies per year on a deep level, in addition to thematic reports and monthly portfolio updates.

Once you become a subscriber, I’ll give you my personal email address. You can then ask me any questions you might have.
