Delta Djakarta (DLTA IJ) is the second-largest beer producer in Indonesia. It has a market share of 35%, second only to larger competitor Multi Bintang’s 60%.
Delta’s brand names include Anker beer, San Miguel (licensed from a parent) and Carlsberg (licensed from a third party). Anker is the most significant contributor to revenues and earnings.
Compared to Bintang, Anker has a stronger taste that may not appeal to everybody. It’s also somewhat cheaper than Bintang and challenging to find in smaller supermarkets.
Indonesia’s beer market is attractive. Beer consumption per capita is only 1/5 that of Malaysia’s. Indonesia may never close the gap, given that 80%+ of the population is Muslim. But tourists, expatriates and the Chinese minority will continue to drive consumption upwards.
COVID-19 hit the Indonesian beer industry hard. The government’s large-scale social restrictions forced nightclubs, bars and restaurants to close. And Bali closed its borders to the outside world.
After the restrictions were eased in 2021, we’ve seen a gradual recovery in beer consumption. The last of the puzzle will be Bali tourism numbers, which are finally improving after the quarantine requirements were removed in March 2022.
